The work permit is the oldest scheme implemented to welcome foreign labour on the island.  This scheme is governed under the Non-Citizens (Employment Restriction) Act & the general labour law of Mauritius (Employments Rights Act). Work permit application should be accompanied by a residence permit application; both applications to be submitted simultaneously at the Ministry of Labour & the Passport and Immigration Office, respectively.

 

Applications are made remotely through the employer, while the employee is still in his country of origin. The employee is not allowed to enter Mauritius until and unless the application is approved. The first part of the whole process remains Health Clearance which is delivered by the Ministry of Health on receipt of full medical examinations results undertaken by the employee, in his country.

 

Eligibility criteria :

  • Maximum monthly salary of Rs44,000

  • Scarcity area or rare expertise, limited on the local job market

  • Founder / promoter of a project

 

Conditions :

  • Employee not to undertake any travel to Mauritius until & unless the permit is approved

  • Employer has the obligation to cater for welfare and well-being of the employee

  • Employer to provide a return air ticket to employee at the end of the contract

  • Employer to provide a security by way of bank guarantee or cheque, equivalent to return ticket of employee. This security is provided to Ministry of Labour and held under its custody until employee terminates his contract and leaves the country

  • Employer has the strict obligation to respect all laws regarding employment, accomodation & welfare of employee
